Why Are My Teeth So Sensitive?

First we will start by explaining the reason why teeth can get sensitive. This has to do with three parts of the teeth: the enamel, cementum and the dentin.

The enamel is the layer that protects the teeth from outside factors and keeps them safe. The cementum on the other hand will serve as the protector of the roots and the gums. Last but not least we have the dentin, a tissue connected to the nerves in the teeth and gums.

Our teeth can be damaged for several reasons and if the damage reaches the dentin layer your teeth and gums will suffer from sensitivity which is accompanied by pain also.

Some of the main reasons for sensitivity can be:

  • Tooth fractures or holes.
  • Pressure changes on the sinuses that lead to pain.
  • Damaged tooth enamel.

The symptoms of tooth sensitivity can vary depending on the severity of the problem. The symptoms might range from mild to severe which will be more prominent while drinking or eating cold foods and beverages. Additionally these symptoms will be felt even when you breath hold or cold air.

Furthermore, we will mention some tips that will be very helpful if you are dealing with tooth sensitivity.

Try Desensitizing Toothpaste

If you have sensitive teeth your dentist will most likely recommend switching to a desensitizing toothpaste. These types of toothpastes contain potassium nitrate and stannous fluoride, which are known for their ability to reduce sensitivity and to protect nerves from stimulations that trigger sensitivity and pain.

During your regular dental check up your dentist will recommend toothpastes that can work for you since there are a lot in the market and it may be difficult to find one that is suitable and works.

The effect of the desensitizing toothpaste will take some time so it is important to be patient. Apply the toothpaste just like you normally would with your regular toothpaste. Brush twice daily for maximum results.

After including it in your regular routine, you will definitely notice improvements. If you dont we recommend you try another formula that can suit you the best.

Use A Soft-Bristled Toothbrush

Brushing and flossing are very important for keeping the teeth and mouth healthy. However it is very important to find the right toothbrush and toothpaste.

Many people might think that buying a strong bristled toothbrush will work better as it will remove food particles and stains more effectively. However this is not the case.

Strong bristled toothbrushes will damage the gums and the tooth enamel leading to tooth sensitivity. We recommend you switch to a soft bristled toothbrush especially if you are already dealing with sensitive teeth.

By using a soft bristled toothbrush, you will keep the enamel safe and string while also keeping the nerves and dentin protected. Also this way you will avoid over scrubbing that is quite common with other stronger toothbrushes.

Before you buy your toothbrush make sure that it is the right size. Sometimes you can choose one that is too small or too big for your mouth size.

If you choose a small one you will not be able to clean your mouth effectively since the toothbrush won’t be able to cover all of the teeth. If you choose a bigger one, hard to reach areas will be left unclean leading to bacteria accumulation.

Make A Saltwater Mouthwash

Saltwater mouthwash is very effective in managing mouth sores, sensitivity and tooth damage. This will also help in keeping the mouth healthy and perfectly clean. This is accomplished by saltwater temporarily elevating the natural pH level and alkalinity of your mouth, creating an environment that inhibits the growth of germs.

Sensitive teeth may develop or worsen as a result of this growth wearing away your enamel and exposing your dentin. Your risk of developing dental sensitivity can be decreased by taking this preventive step in addition to using fluoride toothpaste.

The saltwater mouthwash is composed of  1 cup of water combined with 1 teaspoon of salt. For 30 seconds gargle it into your mouth at least twice daily once in the morning and once before you go to sleep. After 30 seconds spit it out and rinse the mouth until it is all gone.

Use A Mouthguard At Night

Many people suffer from bruxism which is the involuntary grinding of the teeth. If this condition is not managed it may cause a lot of damage to the mouth and even the jaw.

Bruxism can weaken the tooth enamel and also worsen the jaw issues causing the teeth to get loose and eventually even change the shape of the teeth. This way the teeth will become more sensitive and cause pain.

Teeth grinding can be a result of stress and anxiety or as an involuntary movement during the night especially if they have a sleep disorder like sleep apnea or constant bad dreams. In most cases, you will not be aware so it will be hard to stop it.

Some people may not even be aware that they have this problem. If you suspect that you are one of them, it is a good idea to ask a loved one if they have noticed anything strange. Besides this, waking up with headaches and jaw pain can also be clear indicators that something is wrong.

Ask your dentist to fit you for a mouthguard to wear overnight if you think bruxism could be the cause of your tooth sensitivity. Your teeth will be shielded by the mouthguard against deterioration and erosion that might lead to tooth discomfort.

Avoid Acidic Foods And Drinks

Tooth sensitivity may also be caused by acidic foods and drinks. As time passes the acid will wear down the enamel which will eventually lead to tooth sensitivity.

Although the best way to avoid it will be to avoid foods that contain acid at all we know that this is not as simple. However you should try to practice moderation and to also stay hydrated, since water can wash away the acid from the enamel.

Some of the foods and drinks that we advise our patients to be careful with due to their high acid concentration include:

  • Citrus fruits like oranges, lemons, grapefruits etc.
  • Coffee.
  • Tomatoes.
  • Dried fruits.
  • Sports and carbonated beverages.
  • Pickled foods also contain a lot of sugar.

Although it sounds like a good idea to brush your teeth after you consume something that contains acids, this is wrong. When you consume acid and brush right after, the motion will affect the enamel making it weaker.

What you want to do is to wait a while and first rinse your mouth with water. This will help neutralize the acid levels. After some time you can brush the teeth with a soft bristled toothbrush in gentle and round movements.

Schedule A Dental Appointment To Have Your Gums Checked

If you have noticed some sensitivity in your teeth, there is nothing to worry about, but if this becomes unbearable and constant, it is recommended to schedule a dental appointment with a professional dentist.

In most cases, tooth sensitivity will either be a sign of periodontal disease or damage to the tooth enamel. Periodontal disease is a serious infection of the gums and is very common. Some other symptoms of this infection include:

  • Constant bad breath that doesn’t go away even after brushing and flossing the teeth.
  • Noticeable signs of receding gums.
  • Pain around the gums.
  • Swelling and redness.
  • Your teeth will start to get loose or sore.
  • Constant bleeding of the gums especially after brushing and flossing.

Periodontal disease is a serious condition that is divided into two stages: the gingivitis and periodontitis. While gingivitis is curable, if neglected it can lead to periodontitis which is much more complicated and irreversible.

The primary cause of this condition is poor oral hygiene. We recommend that patients schedule a dental appointment as soon as they notice any issues in their mouth, especially if they experience any of the symptoms mentioned above.

After taking a good look at your mouth and thoroughly examining it they will be able to identify the issue and find the right possible treatment to manage the symptoms and address the problem.

Preventing Tooth Sensitivity

When it comes to our oral health, prevention is key. Even though some people can be more prone to tooth sensitivity and experience pain and discomfort, there are some measures you can take to prevent further issues that may lead to more complex dental problems.

The first thing you should do is have good oral hygiene. This will not only protect your teeth but will also help you maintain overall health.

The best routine includes, brushing your teeth twice a day with a soft bristled toothbrush, using dental floss and also cleaning your tongue. Repeat these actions twice a day, once in the morning and once before you go to sleep.

Changing your toothbrush every three to four months is also important. Mouthwash may also be a necessary addition to your everyday routine as it will eliminate bacteria that gets left behind.

Another factor that can help you keep the teeth healthy and prevent sensitivity is maintaining a healthy diet. This includes drinking a lot of water so the mouth can continue producing saliva to keep the environment clean and healthy. Also try to avoid acidic and sugary foods and beverages as this can be a cause of cavities.

Don’t forget to schedule regular dental appointments once every 6 months. When it comes to dental issues sometimes the symptoms won’t be present, but this doesn’t mean the mouth is healthy. A professional dentist can detect early signs of potential problems and provide treatment or advice on how to manage them before they worsen.

The best way to manage and prevent infection and dental disease is identifying and monitoring symptoms. Keep an eye out for any new or repeated symptoms, including pain, swelling, inflammation, or sensitivity, to stay informed about your oral health. For your next dental visit, bring a list of issues or trends, and talk to the dentist about any changes in your oral health.

Sometimes, tooth sensitivity after dental treatments is very common so in most cases there is nothing to worry about. However if the sensitivity persists even after several months after a root canal, dental filling, dental crowns or veneers it is a good idea to discuss this with your dentist.

Another treatment that can cause teeth sensitivity is professional whitening. If you are doing it yourself, follow the directions carefully. If the treatment is performed at the dental clinic the risks are minimal and the symptoms will only last for a short amount of time. If there is any sensitivity or irritation don’t hesitate to contact your dentist.
